ABOUT THE ARTIST

Matthew Benedict is a multi-disciplinary, Brooklyn-based artist, best known for his narrative, historical and mythological paintings, in which time and history seem to be malleable. Although decidedly contemporary, his kaleidoscopic and highly personal paintings, sculpture, and photographs are strongly evocative of other eras. He began his career in the mid-1990s, and to date has mounted twenty solo exhibitions internationally; Alexander and Bonin, New York, Mai 36 Galerie, Zurich, Galería Álvaro Alcázar, Madrid, Stene Projects, Stockholm, Von der-Heydt Museum/Kusthalle Barmen, Wuppertal. His work has been seen in multiple group shows, including Blum and Poe, Los Angeles, Rhona Hoffman, Chicago, John Berggruen, San Francisco, Feature, New York, Brooke Alexander, New York, White Columns, New York, Murray Guy, New York, The Brooklyn Museum, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco, RISD Museum, Providence, The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia, Asheville Art Museum, North Carolina, Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach, Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, The Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, International Print Center, New York, IVAM, Valencia, Kunst und Kulterzentrum, Montabauer, Fabrikhallen Phoenix, Hamburg, Galerie National de la Tappisserie, Beauvais, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana.

Benedict has been the recipient of awards from The Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Penny McCall Foundation, The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, and The Versailles/Claude Monet-Giverny Foundation. His most recent project The Giants, is a large-scale interior mural commission for the Steinway Tower in New York City. The brand new supertall is said to be the tallest and most slender residential skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.

He is currently represented by Mai 36 Galerie, Zurich.
